Now that it’s 2012, it’s time to start thinking of new home design ideas. If you already have a home, naturally there is only so much you can do, but if you’re in the market to buy a new house or have one custom built, these stylish new ideas are a lot easier to work into your building plans. Either way, they’re equally suitable for renovation or designing from scratch. These are some of the freshest ideas for the new year. They can inspire you to make small changes too, since it is possible to get an “effect” even without knocking out walls. Painting and adding accents are both a lot easier than structural changes, and can be done fairly inexpensively.

Herbs have been part of the human experience dating back to prehistoric times. They were and continue to be used for a number of purposes, especially in the areas of health and medicine.
The first recorded use of curative plants dates back to 2200 BC. Hippocrates, who is considered the father of modern medicine, listed some 400 direct herbs commonly used in his day. One of those he lauded for its practical application was mustard. The Greeks also used parsley to treat stomach ailments and marjorum as a tonic, while Greek athletes would cover themselves with lotion made of bruised mint leaves after bathing. During Roman times dill was used to purify the air in banquet halls, while in ancient Ethiopia, celery would be put to use as a stuffing material for pillows. On the other side of the earth, the Chinese were particularly fond of artemisia.
The Middles Ages were a time that saw the wide use of many herbs, including rosemary, which would be consumed as a tranquilizer and for the treatment of headaches. Also during this period mint was employed as a cleaning agent and also to purify stagnant drinking water, and artemisia juices were put to use as a rubbing agent to protect babies from the cold in middle age France. Chives have long been popular for seasoning, and other herbs with a long history of use include basil, saffron, sage, savory and thyme. Even Shakespeare had a place for herbs, describing mustard a “desirable condiment” in several of his plays.
Early immigrants coming to America brought different types of herbs from their native lands, though many were already available in the new world, including anise, lavender, parsley, sorrel and watercress. Settlers found a wide use for herbs, from the treatment of physical ailments and flavoring. Herbs would be burned to provide fragrance and used to improve the taste of meats before other means of preservation were developed. They would also be useful in dyeing fabrics. The use of herbs in early America would also create a new field of trade, the exchange of plants and seeds. But even before the arrival of the early settlers, herbs were being used by native Americans for a variety of purposes, including eating, dyeing and tanning.
The wide use of herbs continues today for flavoring, scenting, disinfecting and for both healing illnesses and preventing them.

When my husband and I were house hunting we had a list of things that we wanted our home to have. We wanted a fairly open living floor plan where the kitchen, dining, and living areas had a good flow between them. Hardwoods were also pretty important to us, and we needed closet space and storage. Aside from those things we were pretty open. It would have been nice to have had beautiful updated bathrooms too, but our dream home did not have that at all. The house we picked was built in the 1950s, and the second we walked in we feel in love. For a house of that age it was really open and the hardwood floors throughout made it even better. The lighting and the molding was all new to the home and it gave it a more current feel, but you still got the charm from the farmhouse that you would want. We loved it all, except the bathrooms. Wow were they awful.

The original part of the home only offered one small bathroom. The previous owners built another small one off of the master bedroom. They were both just bad, but the guest bathroom was our first priority. There was nothing we wanted to keep. I mean absolutely nothing. Here’s what the space had to offer:

On top of the standard drywall a vinyl wall was tacked up. If you have ever been into an RV bathroom, it was that same stuff. Yep, we had RV vinyl walls in our home. It was disgusting looking.

The linoleum was not only hideous, but it was poorly done. I can’t believe anyone would like the design of it.

There was a drop ceiling installed, you know like you see in basements and office spaces. Under it, the ceiling slanted up and really opened the space, so I still have no clue why they hid it like that.

The vanity was dirty and would not come clean.

The mirror looked original to the house.

Lastly, I had no clue they made straight plastic bathtubs. Yes. The bathtub was like plastic.

We had a huge project on our hands, but we got it all done in a weekend. Vinyl walls came down and the drywall was patched up. The drop ceiling was officially dropped and the new slanted ceiling gave it a much needed look to seem larger. New tile flooring, a new tub and subway tile, and a new vanity made it the bathroom of our dreams.

If you are looking at homes just remember you cannot have it all if you are on a budget, but overtime you just might get exactly what you wanted.

Outdoor kitchens, and indeed any outdoor living spaces, are among the most popular and valuable home improvements people can make. Not only do they contribute to the attractiveness of a home that will soon be placed on the market, but they also make living in the home on a daily basis for the long term vastly more satisfying. There is nothing like having a beautiful outdoor space with simple and functional, yet lovely, furniture for entertaining guests. Today, we will be focusing on the outdoor kitchen, one of the easiest ways to open up some space for getting together with friends and loved ones while preparing delicious meals.

The outdoor kitchen dates back to the beginnings of enclosed homes. In fact, in the early American antebellum period, a kitchen in the house was considered in poor taste and was a sign of poverty. The kitchens of the well to do in society were always separate structures, and while they were enclosed, the purpose of them was to keep the smells of cooking out of the home. In modern times, indoor kitchens are a sign of advancement — and outdoor kitchens, of style! Here is a video that will show you how to make your own outdoor kitchen.

If you want to make home decorating elegant and simple, it’s always more important to have a few quality items [...]

If you want to make home decorating elegant and simple, it’s always more important to have a few quality items than a ton of cluttering junk objects assembled for the sake of taking up space. Whenever you are seeking to overhaul the look of your living space, try to go for quality instead of quantity. This can be very hard to learn, but once you have developed a knack for it, it will make your life much easier and your home more beautiful. There is great elegance in simplicity.

During the Victorian Era, home decor was understandably all about clutter. The more objects and heavy fabrics one had, the better. This was because the Industrial Revolution had made possible for the first time in history the purchase of items that had been mass produced. Before, if people wanted such things around, they had to make them themselves, or hire a local artisan to create them. The lure of the ownership of many objects was irresistable to Victorian homesteaders, so they accumulated lots of “stuff” that had little personal meaning. There was also no home security at that time, so thievery was likely a bigger problem than it is today.

The trend now is towards a clean minimalism with a smarter aesthetic. Check out the infographic below to help you get started working on your own minimalist home redecorating campaign.

Natural and man-made disasters can ruin your creative efforts and completely destroy all the hard work you have put into your interior designs for the rooms of your house as well as the exterior work like painting, siding, shingles, and even the landscaping. The last thing you want to hear when you switch on the radio or television is that a flood, fire, blizzard, earthquake, tsunami, tornado, or hurricane is headed your way — but sometimes that is the way things happen.

The graphical image below has tips and tricks for protecting your well designed home from the ravages of a variety of disasters. You will be familiar with some of the advice here, no doubt, but some of it may still surprise you. For example: notice that flooding is a leading cause of property damage in every single state — but coverage requires an additional, separate policy from general homeowners’ insurance. Click to expand:

For many homeowners, the idea of having their own wood burning outdoor pizza oven is very appealing, but few people know where to begin. Everyone likes the taste of an authentic Italian style pizza cooked in a brick oven over the coals of burning wood at a super high temperature, resulting in perfect crust that is crispy outside, and chewy but well done throughout, yet the same people often fail to consider designing and building their own perfect outdoor pizza oven. As it turns out, this is surprisingly easy to do. As a project, it could be finished in two partial weekends, or one very concentrated and devoted one.

Here is a video showing how to build a Pompeii pizza oven in your own yard. Imagine having your friends over for a Saturday evening party involving tasty wines and other drinks, a festively appointed patio, and the alluring smell of a real wood fired pizza being cooked right there amongst yourselves. Entertaining is one of the many great joys of home ownership, so check out the project below and see how to get started building your own.

Creating an amazing bedroom that you will love it hard enough, creating something young, fun, and safe for your children [...]

Creating an amazing bedroom that you will love it hard enough, creating something young, fun, and safe for your children is a whole other challenge. Everyone that see’s my kids rooms can’t help but say how cool they are, so I decided to share some of my decorating tips with you on how to design a kids bedroom.

The first step into designing the perfect kids bedroom is you have to take into consideration that they are going to grow very quickly, meaning that you are going to need to design and plan for the future so you aren’t having to totally start over in a couple of years. Once you have the theme picked out, stick to it. When you are designing a jungle style room for little boys carry that theme throughout the whole room.

Although it is very time consuming painting images and decorations on their walls will add a lot of individuality and creativeness to their bedroom. Also if you have a larger space you can add something fun to the room like a cave, tree house, or life sized doll house. These small touches will be well worth it to your children.

It’s also important that there is a well laid out space for doing serious things like reading, school work, and going to sleep. Many parents don’t take the time to design rooms that their kids and their friends will enjoy because they have other things to do and spend the money on. You should invest in direct tv service for their room as well. You will be surprised at how much your child would love having their birthday or Christmas present be a room make over. When you have the creativity and eye to see how things will look and turn out in the end it’s not hard to make it happen. The hardest part in designing your kids bedroom is taking the time to get it done.

If you simply don’t have the time to get it done then you can hire a small contractor or a carpenter and painter to do the work for you to complete it faster. Designing a kids bedroom is one of the most fun projects that you can work on when you are doing a house. Just think about all of the things you wish you could have done in your own bedroom and make it a reality for your children.

Creating an amazing bedroom for your kids is a must if you are in a stable house that you will be at for several years. They will always remember playing in their custom bedroom and will most likely continue the tradition with their own kids.

I have been a shopaholic for a long time and as a result my closets get full very quickly. I also have a mild case of ODC so things have to be perfectly in order and color coated like you can imagine the perfect american home closet should be. My closets aren’t perfect by any means but I do try and keep them very orderly and yes color coated. I also have a home security system in my closet to protect my jewelry and clothes.

The majority of people don’t care about what color their clothing is hung up or placed in a drawer which is perfectly fine. What most people do want however is a large closet that they can neatly fit all of their belongings in. I have always dreamed of redoing my closet and putting in custom pieces that fit all of my needs.

I was looking for some really cool closet ideas that both looked amazing and were effective in organizing a lot of clothing. I found this video on closet design idea’s and I wanted to share it with you. If you are also looking to redo your closet these are some of the best custom closets that I have seen.
